Schindler is a distinguished professor and Director of the Highway Research Center at Auburn University, USA. As an educator, he has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the Chi Epsilon Southern Region Excellence in Teaching Award and the Walker Merit Teaching Award. His research focuses on concrete materials, with notable collaboration on nuclear waste repository concrete as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar.
