Professor and Head of the Division of Psychosocial Oncology at the University of Calgary, and former President of the International Psycho-Oncology Society (2012–2014). Holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (1974). Pioneered the concept of “distress as the 6th vital sign” in cancer care, a global standard adopted by leading cancer organizations. Published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and edited the Oxford Handbook of Communication in Cancer and Palliative Care. Recipient of the Arthur M. Sutherland Award (2016) and the Alberta Order of Excellence (2016). His research has transformed psychosocial oncology practice worldwide.
