Michalek is a Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. He founded the Design Decisions Laboratory and co-directs the Vehicle Electrification Group. His research focuses on vehicle electrification, life cycle assessment, consumer behavior, and public policy, as well as design optimization and green design. He teaches design, product development, and optimization courses. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and has received awards like the NSF CAREER Award. His work influences policy and appears in major media.
