Presto is a Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, with a courtesy appointment in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is a key member of the Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies (CAPS). His research specializes in pollutant emissions from energy extraction and consumption, including methane from oil and gas wells, and emissions from vehicles such as carbon monoxide and particulate matter. He examines how these pollutants undergo atmospheric transformations, leading to secondary pollutants like ozone. Using a multidisciplinary approach involving ambient measurements, laboratory experiments, source testing, and atmospheric modeling, Dr. Presto provides a holistic understanding of air quality issues. He also collaborates with medical professionals to study the health impacts of pollutants, such as childhood asthma, on a community level. With over 20 years of academic research experience, his work bridges environmental science and public health.
