a globally recognized scholar, educator, and leader in sport business, disability sport, and sport sociology, with a 40+ year career spanning academia, international sports organizations, and community engagement. Currently an Emeritus Professor at the University of East London (UEL) and former Professor at Loughborough University London (2019–2022), he specializes in Paralympic studies, sport sustainability, and sport’s social impact—fields where he has shaped research, policy, and practice worldwide.
A graduate of the University of Queensland (PhD), University of Melbourne (M.Ed.), and University of Western Australia (B.P.E.), Gilbert’s academic contributions include over 70 peer-reviewed publications (books, journal articles, book chapters) on topics like Paralympic legacy, sport and disability, and media representations of Paralympic athletes. He co-founded/led influential research centers: the Centre for Sport, Disability and Health (UEL) and the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC)-QUT National Sport Science Centre—the first of its kind in Australia—securing over $2.1M in grants (e.g., from USOPC, AFL) to advance sport-related research.
Beyond research, Gilbert is a distinguished educator: a Principal Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, recipient of 6 “Best Lecturer” awards (QUT Student Union), and supervisor of 60+ honors students and 4+ PhD candidates. He has designed/taught 10+ graduate/undergraduate courses (e.g., Sociological Dimensions of SportSport & Society) and innovated teaching methods (e.g., online flexible delivery, video assessment).
His professional leadership includes roles as Assistant Chef de Mission for the Australian Paralympic Team (2000 Sydney Games, managing a $3.5M budget), Executive Board Member of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), and recipient of the 2000 Queen Elizabeth Award for services to Australian sport. He has delivered 50+ keynote speeches at global conferences (e.g., IOC-UNESCO Congress, Peace & Sport Conference) and advised organizations like the IPC, USOC, and British Paralympic Committee on sport legacy and sustainability.
